Saffron Night Milk recipe with cardamom and tahini for perimenopause sleep ritual

Saffron Night Milk

A warm, lightly savory evening ritual with saffron, cardamom and tahini.

Saffron Night Milk recipe with cardamom and tahini

There’s a very specific kind of evening in perimenopause where you are exhausted enough to fall asleep standing up, but the minute the house gets quiet, your brain decides it has notes.

That’s the moment I wanted this drink for.

Not because warm milk is magic. Because sometimes you need something that helps you cross the line between still doing and done for the day.

This one is saffron, cardamom, tahini, warm milk and just enough sweetness to round it out. The saffron makes it floral and slightly honeyed, the tahini gives it body, and the cardamom keeps the whole thing from becoming heavy.

It tastes like something you would actually want to sit with.

And maybe that is useful in itself.

A lot of sleep advice starts at bedtime. But if your whole day has been noise, screens, decisions, work, caretaking and adrenaline, it makes sense that the body may need a little help understanding that the pace has changed.

So this is my version of that signal.

Warm it slowly. Dim the lights. Sit down before you drink it.

Then stop doing things.

Enjoy,

Saffron Night Milk

Serves 2  |  5 minutes prep  |  10 minutes cook

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk of choice (dairy or unsweetened oat milk work especially well)
  • 1 generous pinch saffron threads (about 12-15 threads)
  • 4 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed, or 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey or maple syrup, to taste
  • 1 small strip orange peel (optional, but very good)
  • 1 small pinch sea salt
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, for finishing (optional)

Method

  1. Add the milk, saffron, cardamom and orange peel to a small saucepan. Warm gently over medium-low heat until steaming, then lower the heat and simmer very softly for 5-7 minutes. Do not boil.
  2. Remove the orange peel and cardamom pods if using whole pods.
  3. Whisk in the tahini, honey or maple syrup, and a small pinch of salt until smooth and lightly frothy.
  4. Taste. Add a little more sweetness only if you need it. Pour into two cups and finish with a touch of nutmeg if you like.
  5. Drink warm, slowly, with the lights lower than they were an hour ago.

CMC note

If you are using saffron or herbal/supplement products regularly, especially if you are pregnant, taking medication, or managing a health condition, check with your clinician or pharmacist about what is appropriate for you.
